Sunshiny Goodness

After the population of Sacramento grew webbed feet to survive the rains of January, February has been blessing our constitutions with Sol’s smiling face, and we appreciate it. So half of today’s workout will be outside.

Squats. About 70% of max, 5 sets of 5 reps.  Simple, classic, fun.

Pullups/deadlifts.  50-55% of max, 30 reps.  These are kip-free pullups, weighted if necessary. Do as many pullups in a row as you can without stopping, then immediately grab the deadlift bar and crank out the same amount.  Repeat until 30 reps total are complete. Wanna time it?  Feel free.

(let’s go outside)

Sandbag clean, squat and carry.  Go pretty heavy with the sandbag, a weight that might be enough of a challenge to force a bit of a continental clean, or a bear hug off the knees.  Hoist that sucker up to the shoulder, squat it 6 times, then carry the bag 50 feet, drop it and do it all over again.  10 times. For variation, throw a giant tire in your path and climb over it during the carry.

    Thoughts on the video:
    - Damn, my body proportions look a lot stranger than I thought they did.
    - I’m not “back” enough on my squats (back/overhead/front) – from my experience in all the box squats I’ve done over the past two months (in which I am going “back” – lower legs staying perpendicular to the ground for the most part) I’m pretty certain I have the strength necessary, I but I need more non-box practice to establish the habit.
    - Video-taping is good. Unless I get a quality training partner who can keep me in line soon, I’m going to seriously consider filming workouts periodically to keep tabs on my form.

Taping IS good (hence my YouTube endeavors… it sure isn’t because i like watching myself lift). Your body type will allow you to go back further and still keep a pretty upright position.

And remember, the camera adds 10 pounds. Where it adds them to is different for each person.

The freakiest observation is the proportion of my legs. I’ve always been aware of them as being thick, but they just look longer than I thought they were… Now I just need to figure out how to put them to optimal use…

Long, but with a lot of power behind them. Enviable from a strength athlete perspective, since you’ve got that damn upright squatting position that makes me feel like I’m practically doing a goodmorning compared to you.
